Training
Dr. Kim holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Boston University and other degrees from the New England Conservatory, Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music, and Rice University. She has performed at the Tanglewood Music Festival, Park City International Music Festival, Orford Festival, and Westben Music Festival. Her primary mentors were Jungshin Lim Lewis, Bryan Epperson, Laurence Lesser, Normal Fischer, Terry King, and Michael Reynolds. She has had the privilege to also learn from many world-renown performers such as Steven Isserlis, Truls Mørk, Cho-Liang Lin, Emerson String Quartet, and countless others.
Performer
Cellist Cherry Kim, recognized for her “poignant lyricism and expressive gestures” (The Boston Musical Intelligencer), is a versatile musician equally at home in styles from baroque to contemporary. She has performed across the U.S. and internationally as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player, appearing on renowned stages including Jordan Hall, Boston Symphony Hall, Tanglewood Music Center, Toronto’s Four Seasons Centre, Houston’s Wortham Theater Center, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, Norton Museum of Art, and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, among many others. She performed as a soloist with the Plano Symphony Orchestra, Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra, and Fall River Symphony, and has been featured in the Brandeis University Concert Series, Fulbright Concert at Harvard, Boston New Music Initiative, and Artists of the Royal Conservatory in Toronto.
Dr. Kim performs regularly with many orchestras in the New England region such as the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Vermont Symphony Orchestra, and Symphony New Hampshire. She has served as principal cellist with the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, Waltham Philharmonic Orchestra and Symphony by the Sea among others.
As the artistic director and cellist of the CK Ensemble, their "Once Upon A Starry Night" program was presented at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and the Norton Museum of Art in Florida. She currently performs with the Arcada String Quartet, which recently released the album He is Exalted.
Teaching
Located in Arlington, MA, the Boston Cello Academy studio is led by Dr. Cherry Kim, who has taught cello for over 20 years. She has coached for the New England Conservatory Preparatory Orchestras, Lexington Chamber Music Center, Camp Encore/Coda, ArtsAhimsa Music Festival, Winchester Community Music School, Brookline Public Schools, and non-major lessons at Rice University and Boston University. Her students have won auditions to participate in the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, New England Conservatory Preparatory Programs, and the Massachusetts Districts and State Orchestras.
