Buying vs Renting

If you are just starting your cello journey, renting is a better option. Younger students usually rent because they will need to size up as they grow. Renting allows you to –

• get to know the cello sound while you’re learning

• learn to handle and take care

• have the option of exchanging if something goes wrong

Once you own your own cello, you will need to

• cover any repair costs

• you cannot

There are many things to learn about and keep in mind when you decide to purchase an instrument.

Winter preparation

Dry season can be the worst for cellos. The string height can get low, the glued seams can open up, and wood can crack, which can all lead to necessary repair work.  To avoid these situations and keep your cello happy, it’s best to maintain a 40-60% humidity level. If you have a hard case, keep something like the Stretto humidifier inside the case. Or at least keep the room humidified. â€‹â€‹The Stretto humidifier is great because you need to wet it every week or two and it doesn’t go inside the cello itself.
